Why is my Deep Pour Epoxy hazy or bubbly after mixing?
A hazy, bubble-filled Deep Pour mix is not a bad batch. Our epoxy is manufactured in an ISO 9000 environment in very large batches, so a defect would affect thousands of gallons at once. The haze comes from how the batch was measured, mixed or poured.
Check these first: 1. Ratio. UltraClear Deep Pour Epoxy must be mixed 2:1 resin to hardener by volume, not by weight. For 10 oz of hardener, use 20 oz of resin. An incorrect ratio can cause bubbles to form in the batch. 2. Air. A mix that turns white has had too much air mixed into it. Mix at a steady pace for the time given in the instructions. 3. Bubble removal. Pour in 1/4" layers and wave a heat gun or torch across each one to pop the bubbles, building up to your 1" depth. Pouring 1/4" to 1" with no torching leaves the bubbles in place. 4. Room conditions. Work between 60-85F and keep the humidity below 70%.
Small test cups also cure more slowly than a full pour. A small batch or a thin pour generates less heat, so it takes longer than the 12-24 hours a 1" pour from a 1.5-gallon batch takes. That is by design; a pour that cured too quickly would be cloudy.
