Does it matter if my outdoor epoxy bar is covered or in direct sun?

Both can work, but covered is the safer bet.

Under a roof, pergola or tiki hut, the epoxy sees mostly indirect sunlight, and that is where customers have reported success using it outdoors. Rain or snow blowing in under the cover is not a concern: cured epoxy is an inert plastic and a full moisture barrier.

In constant direct sun, plan on extra protection. UltraClear epoxy is formulated to withstand UV exposure and stays clear far longer than other brands, but no resin is exempt from sun damage over time, and constant direct exposure may eventually cause damage. We recommend a coat of UV-rated polyurethane over any outdoor epoxy once it has fully cured, and it matters most on a surface that gets hours of direct sun every day, such as an uncovered patio or picnic table, an outdoor bar in full sun or a BBQ counter. Spray it on; getting a smooth finish with a brush takes an artist's touch. We don't sell one and don't endorse a specific brand; any UV-rated polyurethane should work.

The topcoat is only for outdoor sun exposure. If the same piece lives indoors, you can skip it.

Whichever way your bar is situated, use UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy for the seal coat and flood coat, then add the UV topcoat over the cured flood coat.
