Which epoxy should I use for wood-turning blanks, hybrid bowls, or vases?

Our epoxy turns well on a lathe once fully cured, and many customers use it for wood-turning projects such as hybrid wood-and-epoxy bowls and cast blanks with great results. Turning is a niche application with no dedicated guide, but product choice comes down to one thing: pour depth.

Under 1/4 inch (thin fills, shallow cracks): use UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy. It mixes 1:1 by volume, self-levels to 1/8 inch, and can be built up in 1/8-inch layers every 4 to 6 hours.

1/4 inch or more (casting a blank, filling a container around wood pieces, embedding an object): use UltraClear Deep Pour Epoxy. It mixes 2:1 by volume and is poured in 1-inch layers every 12 to 24 hours, up to 6 inches total (experienced users can pour 2 inches at a time). It will not cure properly if poured thinner than 1/4 inch.

Both cure crystal clear and bond very well to wood and inlays. If a Deep Pour fill is part of a surface that will see use, top coat it with Bar & Table Top Epoxy for protection.

Every blank is different, so make test pieces first to settle on the product and procedure that suit your work. If you build a form, seal temporary edges with silicone caulk (epoxy won't bond to it) and permanent edges with latex-acrylic caulk (it will); both are on our tools and supplies page.
