Can I apply epoxy over an existing tile bar top or table top?

Yes. UltraClear Bar & Table Top Epoxy is the product to use over ceramic, porcelain, and Talavera tile on bar tops, table tops, desks, and similar surfaces. It goes directly over the tile and the grout lines, following the standard instructions: a seal coat first, then a flood coat that self-levels to 1/8" thick.

The key is surface prep. Glazed tile is smooth and non-porous, so epoxy will not bond well unless you sand it first. Sand the tile with 120-220 grit to remove the shine and give the epoxy some texture to grip, then clean thoroughly with acetone or denatured alcohol to remove all dust, oils, and residue. Once the surface is clean and completely dry, apply the seal coat and flood coat as normal.

On a horizontal top, the flood coat cannot be spread thin or brushed on; it needs to self-level to its full 1/8". On a vertical tile backsplash you can brush the epoxy on, although it may take multiple coats for a seamless look (a heat gun helps remove brush strokes). If you are adding pigment, the epoxy needs to be poured on a flat, level surface instead. Test first.

For an outdoor tile bar top, spray a coat of UV polyurethane over the cured epoxy to help protect it from sun damage over time.
